Improbable Theatre & ENO revive Philip Glass' Satyagraha...

Ulrika joins the ensemble of ‘Satyagraha’, directed by Improbable Theatre’s Phelim McDermott and originally designed by Julian Crouch. The show is on at the London Coliseum until October 28, 2021.

Philip Glass’s mesmeric masterpiece has become an icon of contemporary opera. Satyagraha, a Sanskrit word meaning “truth force”, looks at Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa and his development of non-violent protests as a political tool.

The story moves back and forth through Gandhi’s life, with the flow of time, words and music creating an hypnotic experience. It is the second installment of Glass’s ‘Portrait Trilogy’ – operas based on historical figures. Satyagraha explores the theme of politics, whereas Akhnaten reimagines religion and Einstein on the Beach focuses on science.

Satyagraha is the perfect example of Glass’s minimalist style. Paired with visually spectacular staging, ENO’s Satyagraha makes for an unforgettable experience.
